On the Nature of God

Sky Daddy. It’s short, yet it exemplifies the common atheist critique of modern Christianity. It’s an honest evaluation of how many theists see God. God, for many, is a vague symbol of love & acceptance, yet also seems like some entitled, judgmental in-law who consistently nitpicks your actions and expects you to grovel and beg for His mercy despite how minor your sin is! I hope it’s evident to the reader that there is no religious revival going on. People are not becoming more passionate toward God; it could even be argued that Gen Z carries less of a religious mindset than the millennials.

The shallowness of modern religion is driven by an ignorance of what God is, which only enables parodies of religiosity to emerge and hinder a true passion towards God. But what is the word “God” and why should we orient ourselves to it? Only in this could an understanding of the popular parody of piety be conceived.

God, on its own, is just a sound we hear that we attach values to, like love or omnipresence. To investigate God, we shouldn’t first attach large transcendent values to the word God and call it a day. The mistake that’s made here is that people don’t understand these values in their totality and as such make an error in calling God these traits that they can’t fully grasp; an understanding of God should emerge with an understanding of ourselves, as the best thing we can understand is our mind and body.

In life beings are agents that seek growth and rely on passion (whether that be sexual tension or wanderlust) to drive us forward. We’re going forward towards a conceived higher self in this arrangement. If I marry this person or have this car, then I will feel fulfilled. Passionate people are those who strive for these ideals and give their life’s energy to them. This is doggedly pursued until death, when the only thing that contains our essences is our achievements. If not for death, we would still be chasing this ideal. We are in a state of becoming and have a desire to be in a statically perfected realm. To summarize: the core quality of organisms is that they are finite, and they chase a perfection found within a state of unification with the infinite, where they are fulfilled. Only in the infinite may people achieve their true completion as beings. When an agent achieves true completion, they will have seemingly extraordinary capacities that only the great men of history lightly grasped. Completion or perfection through the infinite doesn’t mean that we are now static agents who desire no more, as the essence of our being is a will to rise further up the great chain of being, meaning that desire for greatness in this life and the next lingers.

But why is it that all agents within the universe are chasing the infinite? I believe it has to do with divination and a desire to return to the infinite. Only in the infinite are we truly satiated, not simply because of how our desires are quenched, but because our souls have been completed. If this is true, then why are our spirits enthralled with this apotheotic mission of completeness? Simply put, we have energy that we could use that’d put us in a more gratifying position, whether it be the movement of an atom to a region with lower pressure or us purchasing a commodity believing it’ll make us happy. Then, sometimes, why are our wills against this goal of self-actualization? The will is not aware of which direction it should go when first synthesized, which is why pathways have existed in order to direct, mainly religion or philosophy.

In order to transform the word God from one of a sterile carcass to a life-inducing one, we need to understand our environment better and appreciate its intricacies, whether that be a recognition of the one substance present in all, being the will to life/power, or an understanding of the cyclical nature of the world. Doing this will illuminate the word God and enable us to recognize its vitalistic properties. An intellectual love of God could then emerge and truly enthrall our souls.
