Notifications have arrived, along with some smaller fixes and polish

Well it's that time again: 4:00 on a Friday afternoon. Time for the big push of barely-tested code to production! The sofiechan team has been slaving away in the code mines for you again this week, and we have some new updates:

The big one this week is notifications. It's not going to make noise. It's not going to email you. It's not going to jumpscare you. But if someone replied to one of your messages or sent you a dm and you refresh any page, you'll get a little green blob on the "you" link in the upper right that tells you there's something to see there. On the "you" page you'll see a unified feed of "your conversations" with a somewhat nicer (IMO) design than the clutter that used to be there. The new ones will have their own green blob indicators. This way you can keep track of conversations somewhat more easily.

Also on the "you" page is a simple report of your voting power and posting record. You tell me if it's useful. Basically, now you know how much weight the system puts on your opinion, and how to improve it (prove yourself with more and better posts). That's not all there is to it, but that's the simple part so I've made it somewhat more transparent. More detail coming at some point maybe.

A minor improvement: anons are now anon_123 instead of anon 0x123. It's less line noise and easier to parse if we ever want to refer to anons by name. Thanks to our new intern (a new third guy, not the other anon) for that one. Next he's working on non-sequential pronounceable nonsense anon ids like anon_xibuda. Is it a good idea? We'll discuss that when we have more to show.

We also fixed a couple minor bugs that should make the experience smoother if you notice at all (I noticed). The todo list feels lighter.

The big upcoming change you're not seeing yet is the newsletter. We're getting there. V1 is probably just going to be a summary of the top 5 posts from this week, in your inbox every week. We may have notifications, tag subscriptions and other personalized stuff in there too in future versions. Do make suggestions if you have ideas.

That's all for now. Keep us posted with your feedback, ideas, and problems.

Well it's that time

Yeah it happens. I wish I had a better solution for you. It's been working reliably for most people afaik, and email is tough to get over those final reliability hurdles. Right now we're just using nearlyfreespeech as the provider, but we'll probably have to switch to a more dedicated delivery provider. I'm putting it off because it's a pain and not really a dealbreaker at this point.
