social AI

AI products so far primarily involve a single human interacting with an AI. But historically, the biggest tech opportunities tend to involve facilitating interactions between multiple people. Hence why email became the killer app of computers, social media became the killer app of smartphones, etc. What's the equivalent for AI?

Jason Yuan (ex-Apple) is working on social AI called Dots. Not sure quite what it is yet.

I hope it’ll be something far more intrarelated than just taking turns chatting. Being able to edit each other’s CoT, whatever.

Infinite backrooms are the closest atm? No product but interesting experiment.

I can imagine vast immersive game worlds spun up on demand by generative techniques, but how social is that going to be? There's a dystopian version of the generative media world where everyone just gets heavenbanned into a personal slop-Matrix. I also have an easy time imagining LLMs destroying all existing social media through the power of highly optimized botspam. On that grounds the killer social app of the LLM era may be at least partially a defense against slop, such that you know you are talking to a real peer and not a scammer operating through twelve layers of generative manipulation. Social media dedicated to curate real novel human quality and defend it against various AI-assisted attacks may turn out to be at a premium some day.

As a social assisting technology, AI as the invisible busy-bee army of social secretaries, cross-referencers, gossip-conduits, reputation trackers, etc could be interesting. What if every social interaction had an army of trustworthy viziers and AI ambassadors taking it to the highest possible level? Democratize the social infrastructure of heads of state. Is this Cluely's "cheat on everything" thesis? I think there will be many things attempted in that space.

My prompt for "AI" social media is this: the more fundamental paradigm breakthrough happening under the guise of generative "AI" is supercomputing-boosted gradient descent modeling and optimization of anything and everything. How do I deploy obscene amounts of computing power to modeling and optimization to make my and my friends' social lives better? I think there are solutions there. My best guesses are slop defense, the army of invisible viziers, and something in the area of solving collective problems of sensitive mutual information.
