more useful nyms dashboard in "you" page

admin said in #2814 3w ago: 1313

One of you asked for more clarity on how nyms work, and when I explained it, we realized it was all quite un-inituitive and the UI didn't lead naturally to figuring it out. Now if you go to the "you" page to check it out, it will tell you about your nyms and how to make them persistent.

If you have not posted yet, it will tell you that when you post, your nyms will show up there. If you have posted but only as an anon, it will tell you that you can convert anonymous disposable nyms to persistent ones by clicking on them and editing the bio. If you have a lot of disposable anons (I have over a hundred), it will show only the top 10 and tell you that some are omitted. That should be more intuitive.

Check it out and let me know what you think:

Great feature, I’m excited to see it in practice. Here’s some thoughts on where it can/might be used: popular threads, recurring threads like bookclubs, people using a main nym on every post, using nyms to play devil’s advocate, different types of posts with different nyms, and attaching nyms to posts once they have been successful. I also imagine people will try to 'colormine', meaning aiming for a certain hex color and attaching a nym to it, even swapping colors once they get one they like more. I tried this and it worked out, kind of a small fun thing.

One possible way to do poster vouching(>>2622) could be giving nyms to authors of links posted on successful threads. So if X wrote a piece on Substack, someone posts a link to it on sofiechan, it gets a lot of votes, and X wants to join the platform he could take that reputation via a nym transferred to him. Unsure on the difficulty of implementation especially at scale, perhaps via encouraging the use of the email used on substack and then allowing users to claim rep.? In the case of bigger name people, the admin could invite them to substack individually with reputation their work has earned them. This keeps reputation tied to consensus from sofiechan users and allows deserving people to avoid having to build rep. from scratch.

I also want to request a drafts feature, I like putting notes in drafts on things I want to post about later. This isn't super important, just a quality of life feature I think would be nice.

yeah good ideas on how to use the nym feature. I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with. Some of it might end up having to be nerfed but for now go wild.

I like the author verification idea. Verification of various kinds is on the roadmap. The way we would do it would not have the admin in the loop. I would find a community consensus mechanism for verifying identity features which you could then deploy as you like attached to your anons and nyms. "anonymous unicorn founder say X" "substackauthor says Y".

yeah I'll open an issue on the github and we'll get around to it eventually.

gauche. Might have to import 4chan style bullying of namefags.

cool i switched my nym color to pink from that ugly green I had at the cost of revealing myself as admin on one non-admin post that had the good color. Thanks for the idea. I don't think there's any downside to allowing this...

I should add a way to disown posts, too.

Will stop namefagging lol

Thanks for building sofiechan, the Wuhan Institute of Philosophy will be a powerful organization. Hoping my posts contribute to its success.

I don't mean to send a strong signal against namefagging. I built the feature so you could namefag. It was just some mild bullying over the particular choice of name.

Thanks for the appreciation. The biggest thing ya'll can do to help besides posting is getting more smart friends on, and giving me more constructive feedback on what would make the experience top notch. Finding bugs and missing features is helpful, as is letting me know that you want this project to succeed.
