Got shot. So changing mobility technology.

anon 0x50b said in #2934 1w ago: 55 99

I got shot in the spine and paralyzed from the waist down in 2022. Went to support groups and hated everyone there. They just laid down and accepted their inability to do normal things.

Naturally... I can't do that, I was building an off grid self sustaining compound on my family's farmland in the Appalachian foothills when I got paralyzed, I got shit to do.

So now I'm developing a new class of open source mobility devices that fundamentally change the way people with limited mobility interact with the world. Initially I just want to build the machine and finish my projects out at my little village. Long term though, assuming we live long enough we'll inevitably develop mobility issues. I hope is that people (like me) who's lack of mobility forced them out of the skilled labor industry can continue to work if they want (we usually do). Especially since we don't have enough skilled labor incoming to replace the people aging out and we already don't have enough to maintain our infrastructure. Financing for the project has been a pain in the dick since disability only pays $700ish a month.
I'm looking for advice on everything as it pertains to bringing machines to market. From getting capital for development, to negotiation with manufacturers, to launching the product.

Please do check out the Mobility Independence Foundation: https://themif.org/. It's all open source so my company has given them a couple grants.

What is it that you want to do differently?

I have no idea about this industry but as with everything, building a useful prototype, being charismatic, and having skills is the best way through any kind of fundraising hurdles. What’s wrong with standard tech like wheelchairs? What’s better about your idea?

Your mention of $700 disability checks makes your financial situation sound bad. You have any options for non-leg work?

>>2935 I'm cautious to give specifics about exactly how it's different because I've had 7 ideas patented out from under me. But it allows the user to move quickly, across irregular terrain, through standard sized doorways, climb stairs, all without the need of input from their hands. So you can move with your hands full, or do work that requires both hands. It even allows you to put yourself in a more upright position so you can belly up to counters, workstations, etc. But allows you to switch between raised and lowered positions to change what part of the body is bearing your weight to avoid sores.

The wheelchair hasn't changed much sense the early half of the first millennium. For reference here's an 8th century woodblock illustration. We still make that profile of chair to this day. The thinking about mobility technology hasn't changed in all that time aside from putting motors on stuff.
For more details I laid out a lot of the specific capabilities for adamjesionowski in my response to his comment.
If you want to know the shortcomings of these designs. Just try to do anything in your house from a wheelchair. I can barely use my oven. I can't use my stove. Washing dishes is the biggest pain in the ass. My laundry room is outside and up a step. People in chairs deal with stuff like this constantly but most don't bother to design something or tell designers the countless small changes that can be made that drastically improve quality of life.

Oh I forgot to answer your question as far as jobs go. Between a my nerve pain meds making focusing difficult, my severe nerve pain breaking any focus I find, the possibility of losing my health benefits which are a necessity for now because I'm working, and the FBI being dickheads (long ass story) there's not much work I can do.
So I'm creating my own businesses and just not paying myself.
